On July 10, 1908 a fire broke out in Schroeder's barber shop in the heart of downtown South River. The fire spread and ultimately destroyed many of the surrounding buildings including Citizen's Hall and the residence of former Mayor James Bissett. According to the New York Times of July 11, 1908, other buildings that were destroyed were the Whitehead Building where the post office was located, "Undertaker Morgan's establishment, Silk's drug store, Arthur Levy's jewelry store, George Serviss's confectionery shop, and nearly all the rest of the business section of town." This postcard shows what was left after the fire was finally extinguished.

This view of the dock area along the river is from the 1890s. The 3-story building to the right is Andrew Church's feed and grain store, which was located along the river, at the foot of Main Street. The low pavilion-like structure, near the center of the picture, stood on Water Street near Main Street. The white building further down the river is Klauser’s South River Hotel which was located on the corner of Klauser Lane and Water Street. To the far left are buildings on the old Causeway.

This postcard captioned "Scenes around South River, N.J." may not actually be a picture taken in South River. Some postcard publishers were known to reuse images that were considered generic enough not be recognizable as a specific place. This one is notable because a reversed version of the image is included in the University of Delaware Library digital collections. Their version has the caption "Packing berries in field, Harrington, Del."
This brick church replaced the original Tabernacle Baptist Church which was a wooden frame structure located on the corner of Main Street and Jackson Street. The cornerstone of the brick church was laid in 1907 in the same location as that original building. A new church was built on a corner directly across the street from this one and was dedicated in 1960. The building pictured on this postcard was torn down in 1998.
